胡也频(1903—1931),原名胡崇轩,福建省福州人。是“左联”五烈士之一。作为革命作家的胡也频,具有多方面的创作才能,他不仅善于写诗歌、小说,也写戏剧和杂文。本书是他的短篇小说集。读他的作品,我们可以看到旧中国一切愚昧、落后、野蛮、残杀的社会生活图画。这些作品的可贵在于尖锐地提出并揭露了畸形社会中的严重问题,为旧中国的畸形面作了真实的写照。有反映帝国主义、封建主义对于中国人民的残酷的剥削和血腥的镇压的;有揭露封建宗法制度对于人们思想的毒害的;有揭露在帝国主义、封建主义统治下“国民性”的堕落的;还有从病态人物的变态心理去写出社会的畸形的等等。
