Authors and Friends
Annie Fields 试读
Annie Adams Fields was an American author, born in Boston, Massachusetts, she was the second wife of the publisher and author James Thomas Fields, whom she married in 1854, and with whom she encouraged up and coming writers such as Sarah Orne Jewett, Mary Freeman, and Emma Lazarus. She was equally at home with great and established figures including Ralph Waldo Emerson and Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose biography she fearlessly compiled. After Fields' husband died in 1881, she continued to occupy the center of Boston literary life. The hallmark of Fields' work is a sympathetic understanding of her friends, who happened to be the leading literary figures of her time.

The Mayors Wife

I am not without self-control, yet when Miss Davies entered the room with that air of importance she invariably assumes when she has an unusually fine position to offer, I could not hide all traces of my anxiety. She has passed me by-my heart goes down, down-when suddenly her look returns and she singles me out.

Playing With Fire
Amelia Edith Huddleston Barr 试读
Glasgow is the city of Human Power. It is not a beautiful city, but the gray granite of which it is built gives it a natural nobility. There is nothing romantic about its situation, and its streets are too often steeped in wet, gray mist, or wrapped in yellowish vapor. But there are no loungers in them. The crowd is a busy, hard-working crowd, whose civic motto is Enterprise and Perseverance.

Boy Woodburn A Story of the Sussex Downs
Alfred Ollivant 试读
This is a novel about steeplechase racing and horse training in turn of the century England. It is by the same author who wrote the classic "Bob Son of Battle". This book didn't seem quite as fleshed out as Bob, but provides some interesting insight into the horse racing world at that time, with local characters and dialect. The author was obviously keen on and knew a thing or two about dogs and horses, so his knowledge from the end of the animal age and the beginning of the machine age adds interest to the fairly simple story. Good enough for when you're in the mood for an old fashioned feel good animal story. Also, the e-version of this book is excellent, no weird typos and such.

Chip, of the Flying U
B. M. Bower 试读
B. M. (Bertha Muzzy) Bower was the first woman to make a career of writing popular westerns. And what a career it was--more than sixty novels published from 1904 to 1940, the year of her death, and still more posthumously. In the western orbit, Bower was--and still is--a star. Her first, "Chip of the Flying U," lays out a ranch in Montana and introduces the Happy Family, the bunkhouse gang that reappears in her later books. Chip is the typical woman-shy cowboy, but he is also a gifted artist (reputedly, Bower based the character on Charles M. Russell, who illustrated "Chip"). Della, a doctor, is the young woman who disrupts his solitary life. The result as a quality ranch romance. "Chip of the Flying U" was a great success that led to several movie versions, one of them casting Hoot Gibson as Chip. Today's readers who grew up watching westerns on television will appreciate Bower's cinematic style. After living much of her life in Chouteau County, Montana, she moved to Los Angeles, close to the movie industry that increasingly fascinated her.

William Gilmore Simms 试读
Our scene lies in the upper part of the state of Georgia, a region at this time fruitful of dispute, as being within the Cherokee territories. Robinson Crusoe in Words of One Syllable
Mary Godolphin 试读
I had still some fear lest I should be caught by the Moors, so I would not go on shore in the day time. But when it grew dark we made our way to the coast, and came to the mouth of a stream, from which we thought we could swim to land, and then look round us. But as soon as it was quite dark we heard strange sounds-- barks, roars, grunts, and howls. The poor lad said he could not go on shore till dawn. "Well," said I, "then we must give it up, but it may be that in the day time we shall be seen by men, who for all we know would do us more harm than wild beasts." "Then we give them the shoot gun," said Xury with a laugh, "and make them run away." I was glad to see so much mirth in the boy, and gave him some bread and rice.

Salthaven
W. W. Jacobs 试读
This early work by William Wymark Jacobs was originally published in 1908 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Salthaven' is one of the author's few full length novels. Jacobs worked as a clerk in the civil service before turning to writing in his late twenties, publishing his first short story in 1895. Most of Jacobs' work appeared before the onset of World War I, and although the majority of his output was humorous in tone, he is best-remembered now for his macabre tales, particularly those contained in his 1902 collection The Lady of the Barge, such as 'The Monkey's Paw' and 'The Toll House'.

Richard Le Gallienne 试读
Richard Thomas Le Gallienne (1866-1947) was an English man of letters, very much associated with the literary world of London in the 1890s. He was born in Liverpool. He started work in an accountant's office, but abandoned this to write. My Ladies' Sonnets appeared in 1887, and in 1889 he became for a short time literary secretary to Wilson Barrett. He joined the staff of The Star in 1891, and wrote for various papers using the signature of Logroller. He contributed to The Yellow Book, and associated with the Rhymer's Club. In 1906 he translated, from the Danish, Peter Nansen's Loves Trilogy. Among his famous works are: English Poems (1892), The Quest of the Golden Girl (1896), Prose Fancies (1896), Young Lives (1899), The Worshipper of the Image (1900), October Vagabonds (1910), The Lonely Dancer, and Other Poems (1913), and A Jongleur Strayed (1922).

Pardners
Rex Ellingwood Beach 试读
"Most all the old quotations need fixing," said Joyce in tones forbidding dispute. "For instance, the guy that alluded to marriages germinating in heaven certainly got off on the wrong foot. He meant pardnerships. The same works ain't got capacity for both, no more'n you can build a split-second stop-watch in a stone quarry. No, sir A true pardnership is the sanctifiedest relation that grows, is, and has its beans, while any two folks of opposite sect can marry and peg the game out some way. Of course, all pardnerships ain't divine. To every one that's heaven borned there's a thousand made in -. There goes them cussed dogs again " He dove abruptly at the tent flap, disappearing like a palmed coin, while our canvas structure reeled drun-kenly at his impact. The sounds of strife without rose shrilly into blended agony, and the yelps of Keno melted away down the gulch in a rapid and rabid diminuendo.

Idolatry A Romance
Julian Hawthorne 试读
Manetho's devotion to Helen seems unwavering; yet sometimes it is hard not to suspect a secret understanding between him and Salome. He has ceased to wear his diamond ring, and once we caught a diamond-sparkle from beneath the thick folds of lace which cover Helen's bosom; but, on the other hand, we fear his arm has been round the gypsy's graceful waist, and that she has learnt the secret of the private chamber. Is demure Manetho a flirt, or do his affections and his ambition run counter to each other? Helen would bring him the riches of this world, --but what should a clergyman care for such vanities?--while Salome is far the prettier, livelier, and more attractive woman of the two. Brother Hiero, whimsical and preoccupied, sees nothing of what is going on. He is an antiquary -- an Egyptologist -- and thereto his soul is wedded. He has no eyes nor ears for the loves of other people for one another.

Seated at breakfast on that memorable July morning, Jacob Pratt presented all the appearance of a disconsolate man. His little country sitting-room was as neat and tidy as the capable hands of the inimitable Mrs. Harris could make it. His coffee was hot and his eggs were perfectly boiled. Through the open windows stretched a little vista of the many rows of standard roses which had been the joy of his life. Yet blank misery dwelt in the soul of this erstwhile cheerful little man, and the spirit of degradation hung like a gloomy pall over his thoughts and being. Only the day before he had filed his petition in bankruptcy.

Ramsey Milholland
Booth Tarkington 试读
It all started when he was young -- all the rules and expectations that made him look stupid, and worse than stupid. Like the time Miss Ridgely ordered him to the blackboard, and tried to stimulate him with hints and suggestion -- Miss Ridgely, Ramsey knew, found him mere protoplasm, so far as knowing decimals went -- and so she summoned to the board little Dora Yocum, star of the class, and said, "You stand still, Ramsey. Stay right where you are, and try to learn something from the way Dora does it." The class giggled, and Ramsey stood, but learned nothing. His conspicuousness was unendurable, because all of his schoolmates naturally found more entertainment in watching him than in following the performance of the capable Dora. And it was like that, month after month . . . and then year after year. But he would make himself good in the eyes of the world. Ramsey knew he would. He "swore" he would. Booth Tarkington (1869-1946), two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, wrote such keenly observed novels of American life as "Gentle Julia "and "In the Arena."

Superciliousness is not safe after all, because a person who forms the habit of wearing it may some day find his lower lip grown permanently projected beyond the upper, so that he can't get it back, and must go through life looking like the King of Spain. This was once foretold as a probable culmination of Florence Atwater's still plastic profile, if Florence didn't change her way of thinking; and upon Florence's remarking dreamily that the King of Spain was an awf'ly han'some man, her mother retorted: "But not for a girl!" She meant, of course, that a girl who looked too much like the King of Spain would not be handsome, but her daughter decided to misunderstand her.

Fannys First Play
George Bernard Shaw 试读
Fanny's First Play, being but a potboiler, needs no preface. But its lesson is not, I am sorry to say, unneeded. Mere morality, or the substitution of custom for conscience was once accounted a shameful and cynical thing: people talked of right and wrong, of honor and dishonor, of sin and grace, of salvation and damnation, not of morality and immorality. The word morality, if we met it in the Bible, would surprise us as much as the word telephone or motor car. Nowadays we do not seem to know that there is any other test of conduct except morality; and the result is that the young had better have their souls awakened by disgrace, capture by the police, and a month's hard labor, than drift along from their cradles to their graves doing what other people do for no other reason than that other people do it, and knowing nothing of good and evil, of courage and cowardice, or indeed anything but how to keep hunger and concupiscence and fashionable dressing within the bounds of good taste except when their excesses can be concealed.
