通过望远镜观察，木星很是壮观——是个似乎充满天际的多颜色的球体。它的大小很难把握；鲍曼不得不一再提醒自己说它有地球十一倍大，但在很长时间里，这个数据似乎并没什么现实的意义。后来，当他使用哈尔记忆装置中的胶带来对自己进行讲解时，他才发现一件事，使他突然意识到木星的叹为观止的尺寸。那是一幅插图，把地球的表皮剥开，象块兽皮似的钉在木星的断面上。以此为背景，地球上的全部陆地也不过象是普通地球仪上印度那么大。鲍曼把“发现号”上的望远镜调整到最大程度，这时他好象是吊在上空去观察一个稍扁一些的地球，看见一排排激流似的云雾——由于巨大木星的迅速自转而形成云环。有时候，这些云环凝结成一块块彩色蒸气，每一块都有地球上一个洲那么大；有时候，它们之间又被一时的栈桥勾通起来，每条栈桥都有几千英里长。在云雾笼罩下，那里的物质比太阳系里其他行星的总和还要大。“除此之外，”鲍曼不禁纳闷，“还笼罩着什么呢？”在那永远遮盖着木星真面目的游动咆哮的云层上面，有时候漂浮着圆形的暗影。这是木星近边的一个月球从遥远的太阳下面横过，它的阴影在从不静止的木星云罩上滑过。在远离木星还有二千万英里的地方，也有一些小得多的月球。但是，它们不过是几十英里直径的飞来峰，飞船是飞不到它们附近的。每隔几分钟，雷达发射器就会使足气力发出一股无声的电霹雳；在真空中没传来回声，说明没新的卫星出现。收到的是强度不断加大的、来自木星本身的无线电波的怒吼。一九五五年，在空间时代的黎明前夜，天文学家们曾因发现木星尽管几百万马力的功率在十公尺波段上发出强大电波而深感惊异。它实际是一种生硬的噪音，伴随着围绕木星旋转的带电粒子光轮，好象地球的范艾伦带（范艾伦带：围绕在地球大气层外的高强度电离放射带，因詹姆斯·范艾伦而得名。）一样，但规模要大得多。尽管“发现号”正以每小时十万英里的速度在飞驰，横跨木星所有卫星的轨道也要花上差不多两个星期。围绕木星的月球比环绕太阳周围旋转的行星还多；月球天文台每年都会发现新的木星卫星，总数现在已达三十六个。最外缘的二十七号卫星在一条离它临时主人一千九百万英里的不稳定道路倒转着。它是木星和太阳之间从未间断过的拔河赛的胜利品，因为木星不断地从行星带里捕捉短命的星球，又随时在几百万年后丢掉它们。只有靠内缘的卫星是它的恒产；太阳永远也攫取不去。现在，在这两个互相冲突的引力场之间又有了新的猎物。“发现号”正沿着许多个月之前地球上天文学家计算好的，并不断由哈尔校正着的复杂轨道加速向木星前进。为了进行细致的校正，喷气操纵器不时要自动加以推进，但在飞船中是几乎感觉不出的。通过与地球的无线电联系，情报不断发送回去。他们现在离家这样远，他们的信号甚至以光速也要花上五十分钟才能到达。虽然随着他们逐渐接近木星，整个世界都在关切地注意着，都在通过他们的眼睛和仪器观察着，但有关他们任何发现的新闻如要拍回地球，差不多需要一个小时。飞船在横跨那些巨大内圈卫星的轨道时，望远摄影机都在不停地运转。那些巨大内圈卫星个个都大于月球，个个都是未知之境。过境前三个小时，“发现号”通过离欧罗巴仅仅二万英里的地方；当那颗卫星越来越大、由圆变缺、迅速划向太阳方向时，飞船上全部仪器都描准着它。从远处看，欧罗巴很象个大雪球，正以惊人的效率反射着远方太阳的光辉。就近观察证明，情况确是这样；与黑暗的月球不同，欧罗巴晶莹洁白，表面上大部分都覆盖着闪烁的、象搁浅的冰山似的大块东西。几乎可以肯定，这些大块是由木星引力场不知为何未能吸去的氨和水所构成的。只有沿赤道的地方才看得到裸露的石头；这里是崎岖的无人地带，到处是峡谷和乱石，形成一条黑色带子围成一圈。有撞击形成的环形山，但没有爆发过火山的迹象；欧罗巴显然从来不曾有过内在的热源。象早已了解的一样，这里有大气层的痕迹。当这颗卫星的黑暗边缘在恒星前划过时，恒星在全蚀前首先变暗一会儿。而且，在某些地区还有云雾的征象——或许是氨凝结成的液珠，飘浮在甲烷的微风中。欧罗巴在前方天际突然出现，迅速甩到飞船尾后；这时离木星只有两小时之遥。哈尔已经非常小心地一再检查过飞船的轨道，在最接近的时刻到来之前，无需再作速度上的校正。木星这时已这满天空；体积之大，眼睛既看不到边，头脑也难以想象，于是只好不去管它了。如果不是因为它色彩绚丽——红和粉，黄和橙，乃至于紫——鲍曼原可能以为自己是在地球的低云顶层上飞翔呢！这时，在他们的整个旅途中，第一次即将看不到太阳。虽然太阳渐趋暗淡和萎缩，但它一直是“发现号”离开地球五个月以来的经常旅伴。但是，“发现号”的轨道正伸向木星的阴影中，不久就将飞在这颗行星的背面。前方一千英里处，苍茫的暮色正迎面而来；背后，太阳在迅速落入木星的云雾中。阳光沿着地平线象两只带着火苗的倒挂牛角，然后逐步缩小，消失在色彩缤纷的火光的一闪中。夜已降临。他们越是深入到木星的黑夜，地下的光亮也逐步加强。鲍曼曾经有一次在极光显现的顶峰时飞经加拿大北部，当时那冰封的大地也象这里一样荒凉，一样光亮。但北极的荒原——他提醒自己说——比他们现在飞翔于其上的地区要温暖一百度呢！“地球信号迅速减弱，”哈尔宣布说，“我们正在进入第一个折射区。”他们早已料到这一点——实际上，这是他们此行的目标之一，因为无线电波的吸收将对木星大气层提供宝贵的情报。但他们既已转到木星的背面，而现在又与地球断了通信联系，也不禁突然感到难以忍受的孤独。无线电的中断持续不过一个小时；然后，他们又会从木星遮日的状况下解脱出来，恢复同人类的联系。然而，这一个小时将是他们一生中感到最长的时间。尽管他们还年轻，普尔和鲍曼都已是作过十几次宇宙航行的老手——但现在，他们都感到自己象是初出茅庐的新手。他们在进行第一次的尝试；从来没有任何飞船以这样的速度航行，同这样强的引力场打过交道。在这关键时刻，最微不足道的导航错误都会使“发现号”迅疾冲到太阳系的最外缘，永远不会有得到挽救的希望。每一分钟都过得很慢。木星这时是矗立在前边的一面发着磷光鬼火的墙，高不见顶，而飞船则沿着光亮的墙面上飞。他们虽然知道他们飞行的速度快得连木星的引力也拖不住他们，但是也很难设想“发现号”怎么竟没变成这大得可怕的世界的一颗卫星。终于在前面远方地平线上出现了耀眼的光辉。他们从暗影中出来，进人阳光。几乎在这同一刹那，哈尔宣布：“我已和地球恢复无线电联系。我高兴地通知，演习也已圆满完成。我们离土星的距离是一百六十七天零五小时十一分钟。”计算相差不到一分钟；准确无误地完成了飞越。象是以字宙为球台的一只台球，“发现号”从运动中的木星引力场上弹出，由此而获得了动力。它现在不使用任何燃料却增快了每小时几千英里的速度。然而，这并未违背任何力学的原理；大自然总是收支相抵的，木星恰好损失了“发现号”获得的动力。木星减速了——但是，由于木星的质量比飞船的质量大1021万倍，它本身的轨道变化也就小得无法察觉。人类能够作用于太阳系的时日还没到来。随着光亮袭来，萎缩了的太阳又升入木星的天空，普尔和鲍曼在无言中相互伸手紧握起来。虽然他们简直不能相信，但是任务的第一部分已经平安地完成了。柯莱维乌斯坐落在南部高地的中心，直径一百五十英里，是月球正面第二个最大的环形山。它年代久远，多少世纪的火山爆发和宇宙间物质的轰击在山壁和穴底上留下了创痕和麻坑。但是，自从进入形成环形山的最后时代以后，行星带中的碎片虽然仍在冲撞带内的星球，这地方却已安享了五亿年的太平。现在，它的表层上面和下面又有了新奇的振动，因为人类正面这里建立他们在月球上的第一个永久性桥头堡。柯莱维乌斯基地在紧急情况下可以完全自给。当地的岩石经过粉碎、加热和化学处理，可以产生全部生活必需品。氢、氧、碳、氮、磷——这一切，以及其他大多数元素，都可以在月球里找到，只要知道怎样去找。基地自成一个体系，很象是地球本身的一个活动模型，生命的一切化学变化在这里周而复始。在一个巨大的“温室里——埋在月球表面上的一间圆形的房间里——空气是净化了的。夜间有照明灯，白天有滤过的阳光，成英亩茁壮的绿色植物在温暖、湿润的环境中生长。它们都是特殊的变种，专门为了向空气补充氧气的明确目的而进行改良，同时作为副产品也提供食粮。更多的食品是通过化学加工系统和藻类繁殖而生产出来的。虽然在长长的透明塑料管道中循环游动的绿色浮渣很难引起饕餮家的食欲，但是生物化学家可以把它转化成猪排和牛排，只有在专家面前才不能以假乱真。基地上一千一百个男人和六百个女人的队伍都是在离开地球之前经过仔细挑选、受过高等训练的科学家和技术员。虽然目前在月球上生活已经基本上排除了早期的艰苦、不便和偶然的危险，但是在心理上仍有不小的压力，那些神经不正常的幽闭恐怖症患者还是不去为妙。由于在坚固的磐石或压实的熔岩中开掘大型地下基地要花费许多经费和时间，在这里标准的单人“居住面积”只是六英尺宽、十英尺长、八英尺高的一间屋。每个房间都装饰得很吸引人，非常象高级汽车旅店里的套间，备有多用沙发、电视机、小型高保真收音机以及显像电话机。不仅如此，通过内部装修的一项简单技巧，一按开关就可以把整个一面墙壁变成一片可以乱真的地球景色。这种景色还有八种不同的选择。这一类的豪华享受是这个基地的特点，虽然有时候难以说服地球上的人们来认识这种必要性。柯莱维乌斯的每一个男人或女人在训练、旅差和住房上都花费了十万美元；再多花一点钱来保持他们精神上的安适是值得的。这不是为艺术而艺术，而是为了保持心神健全而艺术。基地生活的一个引人人胜之处——在整个月球上生活也如此——无疑就是低引力，它使人产生一种普遍的幸福感。然而，这一点也有其危险，地球上迁来的移民要经过几个星期才能适应。在月球上，人体要学会一整套新的反应。人体需要第一次区别质量和重量。一个在地球上体重一百八十磅的人到月球上发现自己才重三十磅，也许会觉得挺高兴。只要他保持均衡的速度，沿直线行动，他就会感觉到一种神奇的漂浮感。但是一旦他要想转弯，或突然停步——那么他就会发现他那一百八十磅的质量或惰性，仍然存在。因为质量是固定不变的——在地球上、月亮上、太阳上或在自由空间里，都是一样的。所以，在正确适应月球生活以前，人们必须懂得：一切物体的惰性比其重量所表现的要高出五倍、这一点往往需要经过多次冲撞和严重磕碰才能体会，月球上的老手对新来的人总是在他们习惯以前躲得老远的。柯莱维乌斯基地本身是个小型世界，有它自己的一整套车间、办公室、仓库、计算中心、发电设备、车库、厨房、试验室和食品加工厂。富有深刻意味的是，用来建筑这个地下帝国的许多技术，竟是在长达半个世纪的冷战时间发展起来的。在固定的导弹发射场工作过的人，到柯莱维乌斯来会觉得应付自如。在月球上有适应地下生活防护和敌对环境的同样技术和设备；但在这里，这些技术和设备已被用作和平的目的。经过了一万年，人类终于找到了同战争一样激动人心的事业。不幸的是，并不是所有的国家都已经认识到这一事实。在降落前显得那么突出的大山已躲到弧度很小的月球地平线之外，神秘地消失了。在宇宙飞船四周是一片平坦的灰色平原，为斜射的地球光所照耀着。天空当然是一片黑暗的，但先要用手遮住眼睛不受月球表面闪光的影响，才能看到比较明亮的恒星和行星。几辆十分古怪的车辆正向白羊座—IB宇宙飞船开来——吊车、装卸机、加油车和维修车——有的是全自动的，有的由坐在小型加压驾驶室里的司机操纵。大多数车辆都行进在气球型轮胎上，因为在这光滑平坦的平原上不产生运输的困难；但是，有一辆加油车用的是特殊的可变形的车轮，这种车轮已为实践证明是在月球上运行的一种最好的全能方式。这种车轮由一系列扁平的盘子组成一圈，每个盘子分别安装，各自独立，它是从履带演化出来的，也具有履带的许多优点。它可以根据地形调整自己的外形和直径，而且与履带不同，即使有几节脱落，仍能继续运转。一辆中型轿车上面装着又短又粗、象鼻子似的可以伸展的皮管，正在向宇宙飞船爱慕地嗅着。几秒钟后，飞船外边传来乒乓、扑通的声响，接着是嘶嘶的进气声，接通的两边气压匀衡起来。气闸的内门打开了，欢迎代表团走进飞船。代表团为首的是拉尔夫·霍尔沃森，南省的行政长官——南省不仅指这基地，还包括由基地出发的任何考察团。同来的有他属下的首席科学家罗伊·迈克尔斯，一位斑白头发的小个子地球物理学家，是弗洛伊德以前几次访问时都见过的；还有几位高级科学家和行政人员。他们用带着敬意的宽慰神气向弗洛伊德表示欢迎；显然，从行政长官起，大家都盼着这一天能有人来为他们分忧解愁。“非常高兴你来到我们中间，弗洛伊德博士，”霍尔沃森说，“旅途愉快吗？”“好极了，”弗洛伊德答道。“再好也没有了。机组人员照顾得很好。”轿车从宇宙飞船驶开时，弗洛伊德同他们搭讪着说些通常的应酬话；大家心照不宣，谁也不提他此行的目的。离开着陆点一千英尺，车辆开近一个大标语牌，上面写着：欢迎来到柯莱维乌斯基地美国航空动力工程队1994轿车在这里驶进一个坑道口，随即很快地降到地面水平以下。前边一扇巨门打开，车开过去又关上。门过了一道又一道，然后还有第三道。最后一道门关上以后，出现了一股空气的巨吼声，于是又一次回到大气层，进人基地里热得只能穿件衬衫的环境中。然后是一个不长的通道，里边尽是管道和电缆，象空谷回音般传来阵阵有节奏的咚咚声和振动感。走过通道，他们来到行政部门，弗洛伊德发现自己又回到打字机、办公用计算机、女工作人员、墙上图表、叮叮铃铃响着的电话……这类熟悉的场面。他们停在写明“行政长官”办公室的门前，霍尔沃森用外交辞令说：“弗洛伊德博士和我几分钟后就去情况介绍室。”其他人点头称是，顺着通道向前走去。但是，霍尔沃森还没来得及把弗洛伊德让进办公室，就被人打断了。门开处，一个小女孩蹿到行政长官面前。“爹！你去了‘上边’！你答应过带我去的！”“别，黛安娜，”霍尔沃森说，带着厌烦的温和语调，“我只是说如果可能就带你去。可是我在忙着迎接弗洛伊德博士。来跟博士握手——他刚从地球来。”那小女孩——弗洛伊德判断大约八岁——伸出一只懒洋洋的手。她依稀有些面熟，弗洛伊德觉出来那行政长官看他时脸上带着调皮的笑容。惊异的回忆突然使他明白过来。“我简直不能相信！”他喊道，“我上次来时，她还在怀里抱着呐！”“她上星期满四周岁，”霍尔沃森自豪地答道，“在低引力的情况下，孩子们长得快。但是他们老得却很慢——他们会比我们活得长。”弗洛伊德带着几分迷惑看着那满有自信的小姑娘，注意到她文雅的体态和不寻常的轻盈骨架。“很高兴又看见你，黛安娜，”他说。接着，不由自主地——也许是纯属好奇，也许是由于客套——补充说：“你也想去地球吗？”她惊讶得两眼滚圆；然后摇了摇头。“那是个讨厌的地方；一摔跟头就要受伤。另外，那儿人太多。”“看来，”弗洛伊德心想，“这就是出生的第一代宇宙人；在今后的岁月里还会有更多。”虽然这种念头里含有悲伤，但也含有伟大的希望。等到月球驯服下来，安定下来，也许也有点疲塌下来，热爱自由的人们、坚强的开拓者们和坐不住的冒险家们还是有用武之地的。但是他们的工具将不是斧头、枪枝、独木舟和马拉篷车；而是核电厂、等离子传动装置和无土农场。地球，象一切母亲一样，也要把自己的孩子送上征途，这个日子已为期不远了。霍尔沃森又是吓唬，又是许愿，终于把他的倔强后代打发走，然后把弗洛伊德让进办公室。行政长官的套间只有十五平方英尺，但是竟然安装了符合五万美元年俸和部长级身份的一切摆饰和标志。重要政界人物——包括美国总统和联合国秘书长——的签名挂在一面墙上，另一面墙上挂满著名宇航客人的签名照片。弗洛伊德一屁股坐到一张舒适的皮椅上，被递给一杯“雪利酒”——月球生物化学制造厂的赠品。“情况怎么样，拉尔夫？”弗洛伊德问，先小心地尝了一口，随即满意地继续慢慢呷着。“还不太坏。”霍尔沃森回答，“但是，有件事你还是在去那儿之前先知道好。”“什么事？”“嗯，我想可以把它叫作士气问题。”霍尔沃森叹气说。“哦？”“还不严重，但也快了。”“新闻封锁。”弗洛伊德直截了当地说。“对！”霍尔沃森答道，“我的这些人对这一点有点憋不住了。不管怎么说，大多数都在地球上有亲人；亲人们大概以为他们都得月瘟死了。”“对这一点我很抱歉，”弗洛伊德说，“但是谁也想不出更好的遮掩说法，而且到现在为止也还管用。对了，我在空间站碰到了莫伊斯维奇，连他都相信了。”“嗯，保卫人员听了应该高兴。”“别太高兴了——他听说了T·M·A·－1；传闻正在泄露出去。但是，我们决不能发布任何声明，除非我们知道那鬼玩意儿是什么，以及我们的中国朋友是不是在幕后操纵。”“迈克尔斯博士认为他已经有了答案。他迫不及待地要讲给你听。”弗洛伊德喝干了酒。“我迫不及待地要听他讲。咱们走吧。”

望月在黎明的微光中率领他一族人猿走下河谷时，没有把握地在一个熟悉的地点停了下来。他知道有一样什么东西不见了，但他记不起究竟是什么。他没为这个问题费脑筋，因为今天早晨他思想上有更重要的事情。他永远不会知道水晶板对他的影响；而他的伙伴们在晨雾中围在他身后时，谁也没纳闷他为什么在下到河谷的途中要在这里踌躇片刻。“那些猿人”在河滩的自己的一方，在自己领土内从未被侵犯的安全地带中，在晨曦中看到望月和他族里的十几个公猿，开始还只是毛簇簇的一团。他们马上就象哨兵盘查口令般地开始呼叫，但是这一次与往常不同，没有回答。望月和他的一队人步履稳健地、目的明确地——尤其是，一声不响地——走下河边耸立的丘陵地带；随着他们渐渐走近，“那些猿人”突然变得鸦雀无声。他们的例行呼唤静了下去，代之以不断增长的恐惧。他们虽不明确，但意识到发生了什么新的情况．意识到这次遭遇将与往日迥然不同。望月一队人在水边停下来，“那些猿人”一时勇气复萌。在独耳的领导下，他们又半心半意地重唱起战歌。但是战歌只唱了几秒钟，他们就被一种恐怖的形象给吓呆了。望月把手臂高高举起，暴露出迄今隐藏在他伙伴遍身长毛后边的手中物。望月手执一根粗树枝条，上面插着血淋淋的豹子头。豹子血盆大口用树枝撑开着，一排獠牙在晨曦中闪现着阴森森的白光。“那些猿人”大半吓得不敢动弹，有一些慢慢地踉跄后撤。望月等待的就是这种鼓舞的迹象。他高举着那血肉模糊的战利品，开始涉水渡河。他的伙伴们稍事迟疑，也一拥而过。望月登上彼岸时，独耳还坚守着阵地。他没后逃，也许是因为勇敢，也许是因为愚蠢；也许竟还是因为他难以相信真的发生了这种侵犯。懦夫也罢，豪杰也罢，到头来并无差别，他那懵懂的头脑挨上了豹子头的狠狠一击。望月仁立在新败将身边，不知所措，一时难以理解死豹还能咬人的神奇事迹。这时他成了世界的主宰，竟不知下一步该做些什么。但是，他会想到要干些什么的。然而，人猿们还需要其他的助力，因为他们的牙齿和指甲只能撕碎兔子，再大的就无能为力。有幸的是：大自然早已提供最适合的工具，只等待他们智力发展到懂得去利用。首先，有一种粗糙但很有效的刀锯，其式样足可为人猿服务达三百万年之久。那就是现成的羚羊带齿下颚骨；这件工具在发明钢铁之前将不会经过实质上的改进。还有小羚羊角，那是现成的锥子或匕首；而几乎任何小动物的完整下颚，都可以制成刮擦的工具。石棒、牙锯、角刃、骨刮——这些就是人猿赖以生存下去的神妙发明。人猿已经有了这第一次幸遇。机会不会再来；未来实际上将完全操在他们自己的手中。人猿们再也不会由于饥饿而变得冥顽不灵，他们有了闲空，也有了进行最初步思考的时间。他们对新的生活方式已经习以为常，尽管那板块还竖立在河边小径旁边，谁也没把它同新的生活方式联系起来。如果他们竟而停下来考虑一下事情的经过，他们也只会吹嘘自己是通过本身的努力才取得其地位的改善的；实际上，他们早已忘记还有过其他的生存方式了。那一族人猿偶然也还会遇到匮乏的日子，虽然这种日于已经不致再威胁到他们的生存。有一天直到黄昏他们还未捕杀到任何东西；望月带领着疲乏、不满的伙伴们回家，洞穴已经有望。就在他们洞门口，他们发现了大自然难得提供的好运气。一只成熟的大羚羊就躺在小径旁边。它的一条前腿折断了，但它的斗志并未大减．围拢在四周的豺狼还远远避开它那一双利刃般的犄角。豺狼并不怕等候；它们理解只须要伺机而动就成。但是豺狼们忘记了生存的竞争，人猿一到，只好悻悻而退。人猿们也小心地围着转，保持在那双危险的犄角触及范围之外；然后他们开始使用棍棒和石块进行攻击。攻击进行得并不十分有效，也并不协调；等到那只可怜的羊一命呜呼，天已接近全黑——豺狼们又恢复了勇气。望月左右为难，弃之则饿肚子，留下来又害怕，逐渐意识到也许自费了气力。再呆下去太危险了。接着，绝非第一次，也不是最后一次，他表现出是个天才。经过巨大的努力，他想象到把这只死羚羊——置于他自己洞穴的安全地点。他开始拖着羚羊走向峭壁；其他人猿马上懂得他的意图，群起相助。如果他事先知道这任务的艰难，他是不会试着去干的。只是靠了他的蛮力气，以及爬树祖先遗传给他的敏捷，才使他把那具兽尸拖上陡坡。有好几次面临挫败，伤心得要哭，几乎舍弃掉那猎获物，但是象饥饿一样源远流长的坚韧性格，驱使他坚持了下来。其他人猿有时候是助力，有时候反而成了阻力，多数情况下是碍手碍脚的。然而最后终于成功；血肉模糊的羚羊被拖进了洞口，这时太阳的余光已在天空中消散；于是大嚼开始。几小时后，肠满肚胀的望月一觉醒来。不知为什么，他在黑暗中坐起来，吃得同样饱饱的伙伴们横七竖八地躺在四周，他却竭力听着外边黑夜中的动静。除了他周围的低沉鼾声，什么也听不见；整个外界似乎都已入睡。在明月高照下，洞口外的磐石色如白骨。任何灾难的预感都似乎是绝对不切实际的。然后，从远距离以外，传来一颗石子落地的声音。又害怕，又好奇，望月爬到洞外的岩架上，朝着峭壁下方凝视。不见则已，一见竟使他吓得四肢无力，长时间动弹不得。就在下面二十英尺远，两只金光闪闪的眼睛正在向上直瞅着他；目光吓得他失魂落魄，全未感觉到在他们身后一只步履轻捷、花色斑斓的躯体正在迅速而无声地蹿石跳涧而来。豹子从来也没爬到这么高。它肯定明知各洞里都住着人猿，但它没光临下边的洞穴。它是追逐着其他目标；循着血迹，攀登上月光如洗的峭壁几秒钟以后，黑夜由于上边洞里的人猿的报警尖叫而更加凄厉。豹子意识到自已失去突袭的因素，径自怒吼一声。但是它并未停止前进，因为它知道它没什么可害怕的。豹子用到岩架，在那狭窄的露天处稍息片刻。血腥到处可闻，使得它那凶残而不发达的头脑集中到一种压倒一切的欲望。再也不迟疑，它轻步跨进洞去。就在这时，豹子犯了它第一个错误，因为它一旦走出月光之外，甚至它那双超级夜光眼睛也有一瞬间的不适应。豹子背对着洞口半个身影映衬着，人猿看它比它看人猿更加清晰。他们十分恐惧，但他们并不再是完全无能为力了。豹于傲慢自信地吼叫着，挥舞着长尾，趋步向前搜寻它急切欲啖的嫩肉。如果它是在露天处遇上猎物，它是不会碰到问题的；但是，这时人猿们已无退路，绝处求生使它们分外勇敢。而且，这也是他们第一次有了成功的手段。豹子感到头上挨了发昏的一击，才知道事情有些不妙。它两只前爪扑将过去，脚爪抓进嫩肉，引起一声哀号。随后，一个尖东西刺进它的侧背，痛彻心腹——一刺、再刺、三刺。它打着旋企图攻击在它四周又叫又跳的身影。豹子的鼻头又挨了一下重击。它向着一片模糊移动的白光张牙咬去——却啃在一根无用的白骨上。最后，屈辱得难以置信，它的尾巴竟被连根拔掉。豹于又掉转身，把一个胆大妄为的刽子手摔到灾壁上。但是不论怎样挣扎，它总逃不脱雨点般的撞击，笨拙而有力的拳头挥舞着粗糙武器的捶击。它的吼声音阶渐变，由疼痛而震惊，变成不折不扣的恐惧。这难以餍足的猎食者这时变成了被猎获的对象，拚命地企图退出战场。它接着犯了第二个错误，因为又惊又怕，它竟忘了它的所在。也许是让雨点般落在它头上的锤击打得头晕眼花，它陡然一蹿跳出洞外。一声恐怖的号叫，它凭空摔到岩外。似乎隔了很久，它才哄的一声摔在峭壁半腰处一块突出的岩石上；然后，就只听得到碎石滑落的声音，不久回声也在黑暗中消失。在胜利的陶醉中，望月手舞足蹈，对着洞口结结巴巴地说个不停。他正确地意识到，他的整个境界已经出现了变化．他再也不是他周围各种力量的无能为力的受害者了。随后，他回进洞里，并且有生以来第一次足足睡了一夜。第二天早晨，人猿们在峭壁下找到了豹子的尸体。这具被制服了的魔鬼，即使在死后，还使大家久久不敢走近，但是人猿们随后就手执骨刀和骨锯凑拢过去。这项工作相当艰巨，他们这一天没再外出狩猎。

第二章 深夜，望月突然惊醒。他在臭烘烘的黑暗洞穴中坐起来，竭力想听清楚外边夜间的动静，心灵中逐渐产生怕意。在他的一生中——比他的同类中大多数能期望活到的年龄已经长了一倍的这一生中——还从来没听到过类似的声音。虎豹是静悄悄地逼近的，只有偶然的泥土滑落或者树枝折断才会暴露。而这是连续不断的碾轧声，还越来越响。听起来象是某种庞然大背在夜间游动，并不企图隐蔽，也不顾忌任何障碍。望月还清楚地听到一丛灌木被连根拔起的声音，巨象是常这么干的，可是除此之外巨象同虎豹一样，动作是轻悄悄的。随后又出现一种望月无从辨认的声音，因为在这个世界的历史中还从来没听到过。那就是金属落在石头上的撞击声。望月在黎明时带着他那一族人猿下到河边时，正好对面碰上了“新石”。因为最初的响声过后没发生什么情况，望月差不多忘记了夜里的恐怖，因此没把这新奇的东西同危险或是惧怕联系起来。这新奇的东西是一个长方形的板块，有望月身高的三倍那么长，却只有他两手合抱那么粗；它是用完全透明的物质制造的；要不是初升的太阳照在它外缘上有反射的闪光是不容易看到的。由于望月从来没遇到过冰，连清澈的水也没见过，他对这件怪物想不出有什么自然界的物质可以比拟。它肯定是相当有吸引力的，虽然望月对大多数新生事物是小心谨慎的。但对这个怪物却没犹豫多久就凑了上去。由于没动静，他还伸手去摸了摸它那冰凉坚硬的表面。经过了几分钟的集中思考，他得出了一个聪明的解释。它肯定是块石头，一定是一夜之间长出来的。许多植物就是这么长出来的——象小石子一样的白色带浆的东西，似乎就是在黑暗里几个小时中钻出土的。只经过三四分钟时间，望月就在这种真正卓越的抽象思维的推动下，得出结论并立即付诸实践。那些白色带浆的植物是很好吃的（虽然其中有一些会引起剧烈的病痛），也许这个高大的东西也……？舔了几下，又啃了几下，他很快就清醒过来。那是不能吃的；于是，作为一只懂事的人猿，他继续走向河边，照例向“那些猿人”尖叫一阵，竟把那水晶般的石块忘了个一千二净。黄昏时，他们一边提防四周提前出来觅食的野兽，一边匆匆地在溪边喝了水，开始攀登回洞。他们离开“新石”还有一百码之遥，就开始听到声音。那声音刚能听到，却使他们个个停下脚步，大家都在半路途中呆呆地站住，下巴耷拉着合不拢嘴。这是一种听了要发疯的单调的、反复的颤音，断续地发自那透明的物体，听到的无不失魂落魄。在非洲大陆上这是第一次——在三百万年中也是最后一次——听到了擂鼓之声。颤音越来越响，越来越急促。人猿们马上象是梦游人开始向前挪步，走向那强制性的声源。擂鼓的节奏，他们的后代在若干世代后才会创造出来，这时已使他们的脉搏引起共鸣，使他们不时踩出舞蹈的碎步。他们围绕着大石块，完全着了迷，忘了一切：那一天的劳顿、黑夜降临后的危难、肚子里的饥荒。鼓声越来越响，夜越来越黑。阴影在拉长，空中的光线在消逝，那晶体则开始发亮。那晶体逐渐变得不那么透明，浸透上淡淡的乳色寒光。可望而不可即，形状捉摸不定的影像在它的表面以及它的深处游动。影像聚合成一条条光柱和阴影，又复交叉呈条辐状，向四方散射，并开始旋转。光轮越转起快，鼓声的节奏也随之加速。人猿们一时完全着了迷，瞠目结舌地注视着这烟火般的表演。忘却了前辈传下的本能和自身今生的教训；在通常的情况下，他们谁也不会在天这么晚的时候离开洞穴这么远，因为就在他们停止一切活动看看会发生什么情况的时候，四周的灌木丛中却充满一动不动的身形和一双双圆睁的眼睛。他们绝没想到：他们的头脑正在被探索，身体正在被测量，反应正在被研究，潜力正在被衡量。开始时，这一群人猿半弯着身躯，象一组泥塑，一动也不动。接着，离开板块最近的人猿突然苏醒过来。这只人猿并没挪动位置，但是他的身躯摆脱掉呆滞状态，开始活动起来，象是由无形的线牵动的木偶。头左右摇摆，嘴张了又合；手微紧又放开。然后他弯下身去，扯起一根长草，试着用笨拙的手指打成草结。他好似一个受摆布的东西．挣扎着想脱开掌握住他躯体的某个精灵魔鬼。他气喘吁吁。两眼充满恐惧，一边强制着自己的手法去做从来没做过的复杂动作。尽管他费了九牛二虎之力，到头来不过把那根草揉个粉碎。随着碎草落地，控制住他的力量也就脱开，他又一次僵化得一动不动。另一只人猿活动起来，作了同样的动作。他比较年轻，适应性强一些；那年长的失败，他却得到成功。于是在地球这颗行星上，出现了第一个原始的草结……轮到望月，他没感到怎么害怕。他的主要感觉是一种模糊的不满，因为他肌肉的抽搐、四肢的挪动．都不完全按照他自己的意志。他不知不觉地弯下腰，捡起一块小石头，伸直腰后看见晶体板块里出现了新的影像。格子以及移动、跳跃的图形已经消失，变成了一组同心圆，都围绕着一个小的黑色圆盘。按照自己头脑里的无声命令，他把小石头举过头顶，笨拙地扔出去。石头脱靶有好几英尺远。再试一次，那命令说。他四处寻找，又找到一块碎石。这一次打中了板块，发出一声铃铛响。还是离靶心很远，但是瞄准已有进步。第四次试投，只离靶心几英寸。一种说不出的快感，其强烈犹如性的兴奋，浮上他的脑海。接着控制放松了；他不再感到任何冲动，只想站着静候。一个接一个，整族人猿都短暂地受到摆布。有的得到成功，但大多数都没有完成指定的任务，而全体都相应地得到快感的奖励或者得到苦痛的惩罚。这时，人猿们犹如大梦初醒，都摇了摇脑袋，随即开始沿着小径返回洞穴。他们谁都没有回头，也没有对于照着他们回家的奇特光亮感到诧异。

第一章 走向消亡的道路旱情已经持续了一千万年，恐怖的爬虫统治时代早已结束。在后世称作非洲的大陆上，沿着赤道，生存的斗争达到了新的凶残高潮，还看不出胜利谁属。在这一片荒芜、龟裂的土地上，只有那纤小的、敏捷的或者凶猛的生物才有繁衍甚或仅仅是生存的希望。草原上的人猿，既不纤小，也不敏捷，也不凶猛，因而繁衍不盛；实际上，他们在种族消亡的道路上已经走得相当远了。高踞在一个不大的晒焦了的山谷上面，大约五十个人猿占据着一群洞穴。北边二百英里处高山上的积雪融流成一股溪水，不畅地横贯谷底。时令不好，溪水完全干枯，这一族人猿就得忍受干渴。这一族人猿从来吃不饱，这时更闹着饥荒。黎明的微光照进洞穴的时候，望月发现他的父亲已在夜间死去。他并不知道“死者”就是他父亲，因为父子关系是他完全不能理解的概念，但是看着那枯槁的尸体，他还是感到隐隐不安。两个婴儿已经在抽泣着要吃的，但听到望月向他们咆哮就又安静下来。一个婴儿的母亲防护着她喂不饱的后裔，对望月回吼了一声；对她的无礼，望月很想打她一掌，却感到没有力气。天已亮得可以出洞了。望月拖起那具枯槁的尸体，弯身钻出洞顶低悬的出口。到了洞外，他把尸体扛在肩上．站直身于——这个世界，只有这种动物能够站立。望月在同类里是个大个子，身高接近五英尺。虽然营养很不足，体重仍然超过一百磅。他遍体毛发，肌肉发达，半人半猿，但从头颅来讲，更接近于象人而不像猿。他前额很低，眼眶上边眉宇突出，然而他毫无疑问具有演变成人的基因。当他放眼观察四周充满忧患的冰河层的世界时，眼神里已经闪耀着超过猿猴智能的素质。那双黑色深陷的眼睛有了觉察力的萌芽——智慧的发端要若干年代以后才有可能成熟，也随时可能很快消失而永不复萌。没有危险的迹象。于是望月开始沿着洞外几乎笔直的陡坡攀援而下，肩头的重负并没多大影响。同族的人猿似乎在等待他的信号，这时也纷纷从石壁低处的住处钻出来，开始匆匆奔向泥泞的小溪，去喝早上第一口水。望月朝山谷对面了望，看“那些猿人”出现没有，这时还没踪迹。也许他们还没离开洞穴，也许已经去山边的远处觅食了。既然不在眼前，望月也就把他们丢在脑后；他这个时候只顾得上一件事。首先，他得摆脱掉“死者”，但这倒是一件不必费什么心思的事。这个季度已经死了不少人猿，月在上弦时，一个刚出生的婴儿就死在他的洞里，他只要把尸体放在丢过死婴的地方，鬣狗就会处理后事。在小山谷通向草原的开阔处，一群鬣狗已经在等着，几乎象是知道他会来到似的。望月把尸体留在一丛灌木下边——以前丢下的骸骨都已不见——然后匆忙回到本族人猿那里。从此他也就再没想到过他的父亲。他的两个配偶、其他洞里的成年人猿以及大多数幼猿，都在山谷深处干旱得枯萎的树木间觅食，寻找浆果、带汁的根茎和树叶，以及蜥蜴或鼠类等可遇而不可求的佳肴。只有婴儿以及老年中体力最弱的留在洞里；如果搜寻一天还有些多余的食物，他们也可能被喂给一些。不然，鬣狗不久就又要走运。但是这一天的收获不坏——虽然由于对过去并没有真正的记忆，望月其实并不能对不同的时间加以比较。他在一棵死树的桩子里找到一窝蜜蜂，因此享受到人猿所曾品尝过的最佳美肴；接近黄昏，领着一群人猿回洞时，他还不时舐咂着手指头。当然他也被蜇刺了不少次，但他对这没多加注意。他这时感到心满意足，恐怕这一生中也难得再有超过的时候；因为，尽管他并没吃饱，却已不感到饿得软弱无力。这已是人猿们能够达到的最高期望。他走到小溪边上，心满意足的劲头就消失了。“那些猿人”就在那一边。他们每天都在那一边，但还是照样讨厌。他们大约有三十个，看起来同望月自己的一族也无法区分。他们看见他走来，就开始手舞足蹈，在小溪那一边尖声叫着；望月的一族也同样回报。对峙持续了大约五分钟；突如其来的表演也同样突然地告终，于是大家都饱饮一通那带泥的水。荣誉得到了保持；双方都各自申明了对领上的主权。完成了这项的公干以后，那一族就沿着小溪自己的一方离去。有草可吃的地方现在离开洞穴最近的也超过了一英里，而且还得同一群象羚羊似的大兽分享，这些大兽对他们也只不过稍加忍让而已。大兽前额上都长着凶恶的利刃——是人猿们生来不具备的天然武器——因此也赶不掉它们。所以，望月和他的伙伴们咀嚼着树叶和野果，聊以充饥——殊不知就是这些近在咫尺与他们争食的，却是他们不敢奢望的大宗食物的潜在源泉。然而，漫游在草原和树丛中的这成千吨美味肉食，不仅是他们膂力所不能取的，也是他们想象所不能及的。本来绰绰有余，他们却在慢慢地饿死。在暮色苍茫中，这一族人猿平安地返回洞穴。留在洞里的受伤母猿，看见望月带回满挂浆果的树枝，高兴得咯咯直叫，接过去迫不及待地吞食起来。虽然那里面没多少营养，但可以帮助她支撑下去，直到豹子咬的伤口愈合后能再出去觅食。陡坡下部一个洞穴中传来阵阵的尖叫和呼号，望月似醒非醒，他无须听到豹子偶然发出的吼声，也准确地知道发生了什么事。在黑暗的低处，老“白毛”和他一家正在挣扎、正在死去，而望月的头脑中却一次也没闪过他可以去设法救援的念头。无情的生存逻辑排除掉这一类的幻想。整个山边虽然到处都听得见尖叫和呼号，却没发出一声抗议。每个洞穴都鸦雀无声，惟恐招来祸事。喧闹声刚才过去，望月就可以听到尸体拖在石头上的声音。只经过几秒钟的时间；随后那豹子就把猎物叼好。它嘴里衔着受害者，轻步缓缓而去，再没发出声响。望月爬出洞穴，攀登到洞门口的一块巨石上，蹲在那里巡视山谷。他时而观察山谷，时而观察月亮，但一直在竖着耳朵听。他打了一两次瞌睡，但他睡着时非常惊醒，最轻微的声响也会使他警觉。他虽已年高二十五岁，但各个器官机能还都完好；如果他继续走运，避开意外、疾病、野兽和饥饿，也许还能再活十年。夜越来越深，寒冷而清澈。没再发生令人惊慌的事件。月亮冉冉上升，还有一些星座由于赤道地平视差，却是人眼所看不见的。在洞穴中这一阵阵时睡时醒、提心的等待中，进入了后世称为梦魇的梦境。明亮度高过任何星斗的一束耀眼的光辉，两度在天空中缓慢划过，升到天顶，又向东逝去。
